Stand Out

Stand Out

Written by Marqees William Murray

Max was as pumped, tonight was the Senior banquet at his high school. The banquet marked the first of many senior only events throughout the year. The entire class had been fundraising and planning for this since freshman year and it was about to go down. Walking into his bathroom he got his pair of clippers and began cutting his thick ebony afro down. Once the initial hair was cut down Max grabbed his trusted Mach 3 razor and shaved the rest as smooth as a baby’s bottom. After quick, hot shower Max slapped on some after shave. Initially stinging him the liquid’s aroma of Cool Mountain Breeze swallowed the room. Max let the smell sink it for a minute, this just revved his excitement up like a stock car at Daytona. After a brisk stroll, back to his room he went in his closet and pulled out his attire for the evening. His suit was jet black from head to toe and to add a little flair he had a black fedora to top it all off. At first a smile swept across his face like a cool breeze but then he was hit with a wave of nervousness. Max was somewhat out going but public displays of outgoingness was his kryptonite. This was especially relevant since Liz was going tonight. Liz was the girl Max was crushing on for the past few years and although they were friends with each other Max always found himself a wreck around her. “No”, Max told himself, “I can do this, tonight I shine. He thought of one of his favorite movies from when he was a kid, A Goofy Movie. Immediately the song “Stand Out” began to play in his head and it relaxed his soul.

After quickly getting dressed his mom dropped him off at school where the rest of his senior class was gathering. From there they would bus over to Sheraton Hotel where the banquet was being held. Max was welcomed with open arms by his bros Tim, who was decked out in royal purple dress shirt and Reggie who was in a black blazer with maroon dress shirt. “Oh, look at this kid! Big pimpin’ over here!” Tim exclaimed high fiving Max. “I like the whole hat thing you got going on.” Reggie shouted. “Let me see.” Max handed his fedora over to his friend who put it on. “Dude, this is nice. Where’d you get this?” “My Grandpa gave it to me,” Max responded. “Hey man forget that tonight we are gonna some fun. We got hot chicks, music and food I can’t wait to get going.” said Tim. Max nodded along with his buddy but his mind burned like a dumpster fire. Max was not the best when it came to ladies. He could hold conversation with them and be witty and engaging but if was attracted to the girl in the slightest manor he lost composure. “Attention Seniors”, the overhead speaker blared jarring Max from his thoughts, “Please load up on the busses outside. Remember to board the bus with your homeroom class.” “Let’s get to it gents.”, Tim said leading the pack. The 3 boys joined their homeroom group and boarded the bus.

After a brief bus ride the students arrived at the hotel. The mass of students entered the hotel ballroom were the event was being held. There were tables set up for the banquet portion with a dance floor in the middle of the room. Max, Tim and Reggie sat together at a table direct near the dance floor. After an exquisite dinner, the students were all chatting amongst themselves as the DJ changed the music from light dinner music to dance music. The students began to stir amongst themselves waiting for that one person find the courage to hit the dance floor. Max sat uncomfortably as his friends debated which one of them would go and hit the floor. He looked over at Liz sitting at a table across the room from him. She was surrounded by her friends glowing like a star. His stomach turned as the words the chorus to “Stand Out” rang in his head like church bells. In that instant Max knew what he had to do, stand out.
Silently he rose from his seat Max walked on to the dance floor. As he hit the floor and began to dance his inhibitions fell away. In a fit of uncoordinated rhythm Max let it all hang out. At first this was met with snickers and jeers but seeing their friend dancing inspired Reggie and Tim to support their friend. With one becoming three courage began to surge to the other students one by one began getting on the dance floor to dance. Soon the entire class was dancing the footloose and fancy free on the dance floor. As they danced Max began to get showered with praise for being the one to get things started. Being complimented by his fellow classmates just fueled Max on as he danced. Each song was a new journey on trek of the night. Max found himself getting asked to dance by girls who would normally give him the time or day much less dance with him. Of course, he didn’t turn one down.
As the night carried on Max noticed something, he had never really asked a girl to dance with him. More importantly he had not danced with Liz at all that evening. Quietly he left the dance floor to search for the girl he was smitten with but she was nowhere to be found. Max was heartbroken feeling as if he was a ship lost at sea. He slowly returned to the banquet area as the DJ announced last dance the song. As “Your Guardian Angel” by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus began to play Max sat down at his table alone as couples began to form on the floor. Or at least he thought he was alone but when he looked up there was Liz sitting right across from him. As the two seniors looked at each other Max felt his heart begin to beat like a drum. His palms were like a swamp wet and damp. Then like vomit words, “Would you like to dance?” came out of his mouth.
Max was shocked at himself this was something that he would never do. Without wasting a moment Liz responded, “Yes”. Max got up walked over to Liz and extended his hand towards her. She kindly accepted and walked across the dance floor with him. As they began to dance peace began to cover Max like a blanket of security. Liz gently rested her head on his shoulders and spoke quietly, “You know I have been waiting for you to ask me to dance all night.” Surprised at this sudden revelation Max responded, “I’m sorry if I had known,” Liz cut him off “Don’t worry about it this was well worth the wait. This moment was totally worth it.” As the couple dance their first and last dance of the evening Max felt accomplished knowing that taking the first step into the unknown was rewarded with something unexpected and totally deserved.

Top 50 Movies List #48

48. Silverado

This the first of many Westerns on the list and it holds a special place in my heart as it was released in the year of my birth, 1985. Silverado stars Scott Glenn as Emmett, Kevin Costner as Jake, Kevin Klein as Paden and Danny Glover as Mal. With these four as the lead protagonist you this movie as awesome potential.  Silverado beings with Emmett going to get meet his brother Jake along the way he is attacked by bandits which he dispatches. Shortly after he meets Paden who was robbed and left for dead. The 2 reach the town where they find that Jake is in jail awaiting trial for killing a man in self defense. Paden also ends up in the jail after seeing one of his robbers and killing him. Emmett breaks the 2 out of jail aided by Mal an cowboy who is exciled by the town sheriff played by the ever awesome John Cleese. Thus our 4 heroes begin a quest to stop an evil rancher McKendrick and his hired goons from driving good and rightful land owners off there land and save the town of Silverado.

One of the later made Westerns Silverado has charm, wit, and a really great cast featuring Rosanna Arquette, Jeff Goldblum, and Brian Dennhey to name a few. The score on this film is particularly great and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score. This is one of the greats when it comes to the Western genre, if you are a fan definitely give Silverado a look.

Captain America: Civil War Review

Captain America Civil War was hands down the best Marvel movie to date. This film is a well balanced approach at a versus movie. It has all of the wit and charm of an Avengers movie but with all the tense suspense of a Captain America film. Tom Holland and Chadwick Boseman kill as Spider-Man and Black Panther respectively. I loved Holland's portrayal as the youthful barely experienced Spider-Man. He is hilarious and playful as he fights its like the comics come to life. As for Boseman his T'Challa is strong, passionate and commanding. Everytime he is on screen you feel he is a king. Everyone else where great as well from Elizabeth Olsen to Martin Freeman the cast did a stellar job. RDJ shines once again as Tony Stark, you understood his motivations but at the same time wanted to hate his guts. And if I haven't said it before I'll say it now, Chris Evans is Captain America. He is portrays the character as someone you aspire to be, a goal to strive for. In these days of bleakness in Superhero movies it is good to find that beacon of hope.

Joe and Anthony Russo and screenwriters Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely did an awesome job of portraying both sides of the argument equally. They showed not only the arguments but each spotlighted characters reasons for their choice. You saw both sides of the argument and at times could not decide which to choose. The Russo's showed us that they are truly fans of comic books showing us that they could balance so many characters at one time on the screen and get their motivations, feelings and fighting styles across. Which let me say that Airport fight scene was amazing. It was well shot, well choreographed and the stunt team they deserve a big round of applause. Those guys really put work in on this film. Between the fights and the chase scenes, those guys killed it.

There were some downsides there was a little too much shaky cam during the opening fight scenes. Martin Freeman's American accent was not great but honestly that's just nit picking. In the end this movie was stellar. The Russo Bros hit it out of the park again and leave me wanting "Avengers: Infinity Wars" now.

Years ago I started this blog to put supposedly test myself and get out there. Obviously that didn't work out to well. I'm back at it again this time to be me. No secrets, no shame, just me being me. There will be some fun like my top 50 movies list, comic book characters, etc. There will be some heartache (see blog entry "The One That got Away") but in the end it will all be me. I was afraid to put this out but it's high time to push past my fears and kick down the doors of the unknown. I just hope those doors don't swing close in my face. You may say to yourself why should I read this blog and I don't have a real answer for you. I just want you to give it a chance if you like great stick around if you don't then thank you for your time.  This blog will be my word, my code and my heart.

Top 50 Movies List #49

49. The Last Castle

This gem stars the excellent Robert Redford as disgraced Army General Eugene Irwin as he is imprisoned for disobeying a presidential order. With his record and status he could easily get a reduced sentence and serve out time in a lesser prison but Gen. Irwin feels that is not the honorable way to do this. For the men he lost he chooses to give up his life and serve his sentence.  There is under the command of the prison's warden Colonel Winter played by the late great James Gandofini. When the two men meet Col. Winter is an great admirer of Gen. Irwin. But as time progresses and Gen. Irwin's popularity grows admiration turns to resentment making Winter hell bent on showing that he is the law of the prison.

This movie is a well acted masterpiece led by Redford and Gandofini. As the two career military men play a very important strategic game of chess you feel the tension and consequence of each move. The 2 legendary actors are not alone as the are joined by Delroy Lindry and Mark Ruffalo. Lindry plays the best friend of Irwin, Brigadier Gen. Wheeler. Wheeler is also Winter's superior. Wheeler just wants his friend to give up this noble cause of serving time for the lives of the men he's lost and come home. Ruffalo shines as former helicopter pilot Yates. Yates was convicted of organizing a drug smuggling ring and is very anti social. As an outsider to the rest of the prisoner population who adores Irwin, Winter uses Yates as a spy to gain intel.  The final act of the moving is thrilling and moving battle for the prison with a great finish. This movie moves me everytime I see it and reminds me that there is still great acting talent in the good ole US.

50. Robin Hood: Men in Tights

Just so you understand I love spoof movies, especially the works of one Mel Brooks. The man is a comedic genius and it shows in one of his last films. He is a master at making a cast gel and getting the most out of his actors. The film spoofs the iconic Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner.  'Robin Hood: Men in Tights' stars Cary Elwes as the title character. Elwes is joined by a great cast such as Richard Lewis as "Prince John", Dave Chappelle as "Ahcoo", Roger Rees as "the Sheriff of Rottingham and Tracey Ullman as the witch "Latrine". There are a bunch of awesome cameos, from the likes of Issac Hayes, Patrick Stewart, Dom DeLouise and a bunch others.

Men in Tights does a great job of keeping the spoof on track with the movie it is spoofing, unlike spoof movies today that are disjointed spoofing whole genres instead of one singular film. The jokes are well timed and for the most parts hit there mark. Mel Brooks comedies always get me because he was not a respecter of person when it came to making fun of people. He had the guts to do what was funny and in todays PC world that would not fly. There was the great jab at Costner not having an English accent as Robin Hood, also having Friar Tuck be Rabbi Tuckman was an especially nice touch. There was also the Men in Tights Broadway-esque dance number which was down right hilarious. This is an hilarious movie that everyone should try at least once.

This is my word, my code, peace!!!
